9 BHS Hamptons Agents Reflect on their Holiday Traditions

Updated: Dec 16, 2022

The holiday season is a joyous time of the year, filled with priceless memories made with loved ones and countless ways to celebrate. From ice skating to sunset walks along the beach, our Brown Harris Stevens Hamptons Agents' favorite holiday memories are as touching as they are unique. Read on for their reflections.

"Growing up in the South of England, I am reminded how much my sister and I always yearned for snow and a white Christmas, so I love that magical feeling when it snows over Christmas; the wonderful stillness, luminescent light, and lots of seasonal decorations."

"There are many things that make the holidays special for me in the Hamptons: the smell of burning fireplaces, driving past the lighted trees along Main Street in Sag Harbor Village and Southampton Village, together time with the people you care about, and picking out special gifts. Lighting the menorah with my family is also a very special part of the year for me."

"My family and I always love taking a walk on the beach during the powerful winter holiday sunsets, then stopping by Wölffer Estate Vineyard and Sagaponack Distillery to cheer on the holidays and the New Year with friends and family."

"For the last 25 years of his life, early every November Dad would stop shaving and getting his hair cut. His red velvet suit would come out of storage and his date book would be full. He was the official Santa for Gurney's Inn in Montauk and he would visit schools, senior centers and any place else he was asked to go. He brought smiles and laughter to so many."

"For 32 years, my family owned an 1885 Stanford home on nearly 6 acres on Lake Agawam. We would gather for some Christmases but mostly for New Year’s. I recall a favorite memory was ice skating on Old Town Pond & watching the Ice boating on Mecox Bay. The Village of Southampton, aglow with holiday decorations, was magical."

"I live in Springs, East Hampton and my neighborhood has some silly traditions throughout the year. Many of my neighbors have a variety of golf carts, with some of them being converted to mini monster trucks with tweaked engines and fat off road tires. Christmas begets a holiday flotilla of these golf carts dressed up as a variety of holiday floats."

"One of my favorite times is the tree-lighting in Southampton Village and the parade of lighted and decorated firetrucks. Kids and grown-ups alike line up, filling the streets with an amazing energy and spirit of the holidays. You can see the lighted eyes and great happy smiles on everyone’s face and it is an amazing feeling to be surrounded by that energy."

"My favorite part of the season is driving around to all the villages throughout the Hamptons at night and seeing how each is decorated. They are all different, but amazing."

"Having been a member of the Breakwater Yacht Club since 1989 and serving on the board for 15 years, I began the tradition of Toys for Tots at BYC in 2004 and handed the reins over in 2018.Instead of using a box, we use a boat and fill it with donations of new toys to be handed out to children who need something special for the holidays. The tradition continues today and the response from the community is truly inspiring."
