If you’re not sure where to start, Eat Okra is an incredible app that serves as a directory of Black-owned restaurants. Black-Owned Brooklyn is another great resource for Black-owned businesses of all kinds that are located in Brooklyn. Thrillist has also created a list of ways to support New York’s Black community.

Food & Drink
Harlem
Helmed by Chef JJ Johnson, Fieldtrip is a "community-based dining experience that celebrates culture through the shared experience of rice." The restaurant has been instrumental in serving its community during this pandemic, feeding frontline workers and families in need.
Riverdale and East Harlem
A family-run shop opened by Lloyd Adams in 1985, Lloyd's Carrot Cake serves seven cake varieties, including its namesake carrot cake. The beloved recipe has stood the test of time and Lloyd's legacy is carried on by his wife Betty, who runs the shop.

This old-school Southern-style fish fry restaurant in Montclair is authentic, reliable, unassuming, and beloved by locals.

Named after the location of the first Black-owned bars in the city, 67 Orange Street serves sophisticated cocktails and delicious small plates (including an ancho chili and lime-flavored Cajun popcorn).
Upper Manhattan and the Bronx
Buunni is run by a husband-and-wife team that moved to New York from Ethiopia in 2011. The small-batch-roasted Ethiopian coffee is served alongside delicious baked treats at their locations, which often host artists and performers. You can buy their blends on the website, too.

Handmade, small-batch ice cream and non-dairy frozen desserts are served at Sugar Hill Creamery, a family-run shop near Marcus Garvey Park.

Chef Cisse and Chef Cheikh are cousins who came to New York from Senegal in 1995. After working under Michelin-starred chefs, the duo opened Ponty Bistro in 2008. Here, African flavors meld with French techniques and American influences.
