Last week proved to be one for the Jersey City history books—inspiring both shock and mass celebration throughout the community. In the first round of March Madness on Thursday, the 15th-seeded Saint Peter's University Peacocks took down the powerhouse 2-seed Kentucky Wildcats with a final score of 85-79. They advanced into the second round of the tournament, where they swiftly beat the Murray State Racers with a 70-60 win. The triumphs earned the Peacocks their first Sweet 16 appearance in the school's history.

The celebration has continued throughout Jersey City since, bolstering local pride and activity as many herald the underdog team's triumph as a Cinderella story of sorts.

Saint Peter's University Peacocks

In true Jersey fashion, the community has rallied behind Saint Peter's University, with donations and merchandise sales ramping up in support of the school and the Peacocks.

Similarly, several Jersey City restaurants and bars are hosting viewing parties for this week's game, with some even creating special menu items in honor of the team.

Looking for the perfect local spot to watch the game and cheer on the Peacocks? Here are a few great options worth considering.

Departed Soles Brewing Company

The city's first modern brewery has been a favorite since it opened in 2015. The business is also a staunch supporter of the Peacocks. The owners even decided to create and re-label a new brew to honor the team. You can enjoy the "Busted Bracket" lager and other award-winning brews while watching Friday's game against Purdue.

McGinley Square Pub Jersey City

Located just a few blocks from the Saint Peter's campus, McGinley Square is a standby for locals and students alike. It should thus come as no surprise that the pub has and will continue to host lively viewing parties for the basketball games.

Be sure to get there early to get a good seat and enjoy McGinley's happy hour special.

O'Leary's Publik House

O'Leary's is special in that its owner, Kevin Hennessey, is a former student of Saint Peter's who played for the Peacocks during his time at the school. He opened the restaurant with the mission of creating a comfortable home away from home for the working people of Jersey City.

With a full menu that includes everything from gourmet burgers and sandwiches to pizza, you can have a great meal while drinking a refreshing pint or cocktail alongside Hennessey's friends, many of whom are former Peacocks themselves.
